Yes I can write a new file to the desktop iPod folder, and see it when the iPod is disconnected (I've confirmed this on two different generations of iPod) So the issue (from my point of view) seems to be specifically writing to playlists, but the fact I can write downloaded files such as podcasts to the iPod is a major step forward for me.
