trying to transfer has a lot of "subdirectories" in it. These directories
also have several types of files in them... ie.. text, video, wav, mp3,
etc.

Thanks. I did rebuild alsa, and it seems I successfully caused that
driver to be created.
Then I ran "make install", then "depmod", and rebooted (just in case -
windows habit). Then I ran "alsaconf" and the card was found!
Now when I run "lsmod", life look good:

In Debian you shouldn't run "make install."
Use make-kpkg to build your kernel and modules, then
install with dpkg.

It is also quite possible that you can switch to another virtual console and
log in through that. Do this by hitting ctrl+alt+F1 to get to the first
virtual console. You should have virtual consoles on F1 - F6. This will
allow you to go in and look at the system to see where it might be hanging.
