It is also quite possible that you can switch to another virtual console and log in through that. Do this by hitting ctrl+alt+F1 to get to the first virtual console. You should have virtual consoles on F1 - F6. This will allow you to go in and look at the system to see where it might be hanging.
Just so you know, it might not be X that hangs but some other process that xinit is trying to start. I ran into a problem similar to this after installing ifplugd for my wireless card. I had to take its script out of the startup.
