For a lng time now ive had a problem running "startx" as normal user
It runs fine as root though.
I log in as normal user, run startx and it will just sit there. ???
Interestingly hitting c ( usually twice ) seems to kick start it,
so i assume its hanging

Well, we made a booboo:) My brother was attempting an
innocent apt-get upgrade, however, he accidently
missed an "unstable" line in his sources.list file.
The result is now that he has some WOODY files sitting
ont he computer and it's causing problems.

Since doing a apt-get update / apt-get upgrade today I have noticed
that dselect has stopped working with the following error message:
dselect: failed to getch in main menu: Success

downgrade the dpkg file to dpkg_1.6.9.

The boot messages tell me that a PS/2 mouse port is found, but the

I get the following errors:
debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (It then lists files it can't find and
such)
E: Write error - write (32 Broken Pipe)
E: Failure running script dpkg-preconfigure --apt

Usually 'rm /var/cache/apt/*.bin' makes it go away, I dont understand how

Well, I finally am close to getting quake-3dfx to work with my machine.
When I try to run it, the splash screen comes up for 3dfx, and then
screen goes blank and nothing else happens. This locks everything up,

I have the current jdk1.1.7 jre and jdk packages installed, with the
swing-1.1.1 jar file in the CLASSPATH and get the following error when

Try commenting out the smtp line in /etc/inetd.conf and then running exim as
a daemon (#/etc/init.d/exim start) and see if you get error messages?

I have always just killed gpm from the init scripts, because gpm and X
have never gotten along on my system. Also a ps/2. Its stupid, and
dselect loves to reinstall the scripts, so that my mouse will either die
as soon as dselect starts configuring stuff, or will go all crazy.

Actually, in potato, you can get gpm to port the mice data to
/dev/gpmdata and then just get X to read that, thus removing the need
to kill gpm. It was broken for a while, but it works fine now.

placement hasn't helped, and the xlib6g-dev package was already installed.
Also tried getting the original 117 package from Steve Byrne's site and it

I haven't looked into this as vigilantly as I should have, but today, I
allowed dselect to update things from the current frozen dist in
conjunction with installing a new package. After the install finished,
running dselect works to the menu, but fails on selecting any option
with the message:

in the TeTeX distribution, which means that initex cannot run to
