There is a problem with dpkg_1.6.10 which gives this error. Please downgrade the dpkg file to dpkg_1.6.9.
I assume that you have just done an upgrade to the new package and this broke dselect. dpkg itself still works, so you just need the file and use: dpkg -i packagename.deb Then when dselect is working go to the selection menu and put dpkg on hold for now.
