I have the same problem, in the x console. I thought perhaps it might be XF86 3.3.6 that is the problem. I re-compiled kernel 2.2.14, and the problem persists. Basically, the ps2 mouse is frozen in the x window; i.e., it reacts much like the old bus mouse problem. So now I kill gpm when invoking x, then use startx gpm -R -m /dev/psaux -t ps2 and the mouse works fine in x.
