I'd like to upgrade from JDK-17 to JDK-21.
Since I am new to, well, Linux in general, I'd like to know from anyone
who'd done this upgrade if this would be OK under Debian 12 (No
free-firmwarepackages please).
Any advice would be much appreciated.

jdk 1.2 works in sarge,
When I run it in etch, I get the following message:

with all due respect, and bearing in mind that I don't use backports,
this really looks more like a mistake or transition in the backports

Hello,
I am trying to install java6 from etch backports on an amd64 machine.
Problem is that sun-java6-jre (machine independent) is version
6-06-1~bpo40+1
(which is version i386 uses) but the rest of amd64 sun-java5 packages are
6-00-2~bpo.1
apt-get -s install -f sun-java6-jre sun-java6-jdk sun
You can also use apt-get instead.
apt-get remove --purge sun-java5-jdk
apt-get install sun-java5-jdk [although the newer one is 6, if you
need the class Console]
You won't have to confirm anything, apt will do it for you.

I think I shall file a bug against jdk1.1 and jikes. (First I'll check the

Craig: Yes, I knew you meant the 'Q' key. My favorite thing about
dselect is that I haven't had to learn how to use dpkg :-)
dman: Yes, I understand jikes is just a compiler, but I'll try it with
your recommendation. I've noticed that javac is kind of s l o w.

Yeah, the Blackdown people signed an NDA with Sun in order to port the
Sun jdk to Linux. I think now Sun has decided to actually distribute

You just have to create an account (it's

What packages supply jdk 1.3? Are there any packages at all of sun's
