The way I did it was to install the tarball from java.sun.com (into /usr/local/jdk) and then use java-compiler-dummy and java-virtual-machine-dummy. These are packages the satisfy dependencies for jvm/javac and also act as wrapper scripts for whatever version of java you have installed. You also
