Are you using DHCP? If so, you need to enable CONFIG_PACKET and
CONFIG_FILTER. (Or use pump instead of dhclient.)

If you want /dev/dsp, you need to turn on OSS emulation. Do a modprobe
snd-pcm-oss (you may also need snd-mixer-oss and snd-s
u unmount
/var/cache, you should still be able to see the files under /var/cache.
Just delete those, and remount /var/cache.

kernel are you using? Is it a stock Debian kernel, or one that you
compiled yourself?

Hmm. If it doesn't work with root, then it's probably not a permissions
problem. You can check that your kernel supports USB, and that the
usbdevfs is mounted (make sure /proc/bus/usb exists). When you plug the
camera in, a new file should appear in /proc/bus/usb/00?/.

approaches. Basically, you need to make sure that your user has proper
permissions for the device in /proc/bus/usb.
