I have alternatives to this (from my actual machine.) focusing
on redundancy in mind.
1. Use non-lilo mbr on master boot record(/dev/hda). mbr is good.
2. Install lilo in each partition (like /dev/hda1)

Having said that, It sounds like a lilo oops. Will your rescue boot disk
pull it up? if so, you might want to clean the drive and when it's all
done, re-run lilo afte

I tarred up my /home directory in preparation for burning it for safe
keeping. When tar was done running it exited then reported that the file
I just made was literally too big to do anything with. rm, mv, cp, nothing
will affect it. Here is what I see:
rm: cannot remove `/tmp/save.
I decided to try progeny and I'm pretty pleased. There is a lot more
user friendly stuff for the most part, including a gui install and gui
package management. You can read another review of it at
debianplanet.org. If you can uograde via potato, I'd do that.

I'm running into the same problem with php3.
I have uncommented the line
LoadModule php3_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp3.so
As well as the the two "AddType" lines, and still apache doesn't load php3 when
I try viewing my .php3 files.

I think you'd be able to do this by installing the new
distribution on a separate partition (hd?) and during
the install, don't write the boot record to mbr (there
are other options of where to write it, including floppy
(which is probably a good idea) maybe /boot(?))

got a couple replies, good thing I already fixed it cuz they weren't
much help. both said net-tools broke, and one said to upgrade to the
version I already have installed. thanks anyway, and if anybody else
gets random net problems and ya can't ping localhost, check ifconfig
and route for lo.

Thanks for the response. But no the drives are not exactly the
same. However, the original drive and its partitions will
comfortably fit in the new drive. That is why I need a less
simple approach using sfdisk, mke2fs, cpio, etc.

IF (and only if) the drives are geometrically the same, you can use dd:
dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb
to copy directly disk-to-disk, or to save to a file for later dumping to
a disk:

I have a an annoying wierd little problem that has been vexing me
sorely. I have lost the use of the mouse in Midnight Commander when
using the command line interface (i. e. outside of X). The funny thing
is that it works under an X-term or E-term window in X. It happened

is in non-free. Edit your /etc/apt/sources.list to include one of the
Debian mirrors and specify non-free in addition to main and contrib.

Didn't you say that you had ntp installed? It corrects the clock when you
are on the Net. Try shutting it down for a while.

Which Kernel and which version of the Kernel? If kernel 2.4.x and
ppp < 2.4 you should upgrade ppp. See [1] where to find this package
recompiled for potato.
