aha! more information is better than less information.
according to /usr/share/doc/apache/manual/mod/directives.html
(check it out -- you should have one, too) the "AddType"
directive is handled by the MIME module -- i.e. you need
to make sure you uncomment
LoadModule mime_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/mod_mime.so
(if you're using apache 1.3 that is.)
