I think you'd be able to do this by installing the new 
distribution on a separate partition (hd?) and during 
the install, don't write the boot record to mbr (there 
are other options of where to write it, including floppy
(which is probably a good idea) maybe /boot(?))

Then, once installed, add in the new partition to your 
existing lilo.conf with a different label pointing to wherever 
you put the new install's boot record.

Haven't done this myself, these are very general and 
untested instructions, use at your own risk.
