I have this crazy idea of porting uCLinux to the 68000-based Macs.
Regular Linux won't run on such old hardware because they don't have
memory management hardware, but uCLinux is among other things a patch
that removes the need for an MMU from the linux kernel.
(It also removes memory protectio

Besides using GAS, you can also use inline assembler in C or C++ code
with gcc. That's probably the best way to get started, rather than
writing entire assembly source files from scratch.

OS X works pretty well when used for purely Unix
applications, for example running servers like Apache, but when you do anything
with the GUI, it runs very slow compared to Linux.

at all (besides what is normally provided by the host bus adapter). I really

ly real problem I ever have is that if I stress the machine really hard,
so that the swap is thrashing really bad, it will eventually drop into the
debugger. That never happens during normal use though.

You need to use 15 bit color depth. I had the same problem.
My Mac's not on right now or I could get you the XF86Config-4. Try configuring
it yourself for 15 bit, and if you can't I'll boot it up later and post my config.

I've tried to download a couple of files via http from Mozilla, one of them
being the AbiWord gnome deb from http://www.abisource.com/download/
The web server identifies my machine as a PowerPC linux host and offers me
PowerPC debs.
The download appears to go to 100% but then no file is left
I have a single button mouse and an old Apple Keyboard II. I had a much
nicer keyboard but I mixed them up when I borrowed someone's old Mac for
testing, and gave them back my nice keyboard by mistake, and then it
sort of disappeared.

not either of the files driver-1.bin or driver-2.bin. Not sure what
they're for.
Once I was able to install my modules, I could enable the use of the ppp
and compression modules.
And _somewhere_ on a web page that some helpfu

that WinRoute corrupts data transmitted through it; I don't want to try

It's not just that you _should_ unpack BootX on the Mac side, it's that
you have to. It is a Mac OS application, and therefore has a filetype,
creator code, and resource fork. While you might be able to extract the
bitstreams of all these (and the data fork), they won't do you much good.

I'm buying a new DIMM for my Mac 8500, and would like to give it a
thorough test when it arrives in a couple days. It wouldn't be a bad
idea to test the memory I've got before I install the new DIMM, as it is
old and has been in heavy use for years.
