My machine boots at home without a network connection, though it does
take a lot longer to boot due to DHCP timeouts.
I'm using an Apple G3 PowerBook with the builtin ethernet connection.

My biggest concern is that I wonder if the PC card ethernet
ng at CIPE. It implements a VPN over UDP. Go the
CIPE website to find out more. It uses UDP rather than TCP because you
can get some really ugly things happening if you tunnel TCP within TCP.
Basically timeout/resend issues at both layers.

Are you using devfs ???
I had to modify /etc/devfs/perms (or something like that) to get a user
to access the serial ports via minicom.

Doing an "apt-cache search netware" will give you some packages to
investigate.
$ apt-cache search netware
lg-issue34 - Issue 34 of the Linux Gazette.
ncpfs - Utilities to use resources from NetWare servers.
Obviously the ncpfs is one to try out.

h the PowerMac OpenFirmware
prompt. For an Intel PC, you may have to setup lilo on a floppy.
Infact, you should be able to use the standard boot floppies. You
should be able to give a root=/dev/hdc (or whatever the zip drive is).
Play around with these ideas.
Good luck,
Brendan Simon.
