Seconded, use a good quality can-of-air and spray into the laptop air
intake. I had a similar problem with my 2nd hand thinkpad, clearing
the intakes and exhausts did no end of good. Keep the can vertical
though, or you may find yourself spraying your CPU with insta-freeze.

I reinstalled Debian, and it turned out to be just as simple as:
# apt-get install x-window-system
, and select /dev/psaux as mouse port, and then
# apt-get install xfce4
$ startx

Take a look into the logfile of your Xserver, that would be either
/var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/XFree86.0.log (depends on the xserver

As for using kde instead of gnome, try apt-get instal

try executing X on its own (in a root terminal). If you get an error
message, then post it here.
Also make sure that x-window-system and x-window-system-core are installed
apt-get install gdm gnome
