Hi Paul,
That's the real problem. There was an announcement that support for the
SS4000E was being dropped following squeeze. I think that it had something to
do with the CPU: maybe the lack of a coprocessor. There is no installer for
the iop32x in jessie. So, squeeze is it.
net access, the risks are extremely small for my new SS4000.

Hello!
As you can see, there's an "arm64" architecture
at both "buildd.debian.org" & "buildd.debian-ports.org", e. g.:
http://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=glibc&suite=unstable
http://buildd.debian-ports.org/status/package.php?p=glibc&s
one point me at how to do so using the GNU assembler?
I guess since it is off-topic here, off list replies would be
better?

Martin,
I can confirm the procedure you suggested below works on my non-eSATA
Sheevaplug.
uname -a now gives:

So this detour: Lenny -> Squeeze apparently works.

Try 'aptitude show debmi

However, with hindsight, it might have been more sensible just to
replace the battery and that probably makes even more sense as slugs are
getting older. There must be a limit to how many times the case can be

In the end I decided to really follow the instructions at

Then I changed the entries in fstab to use "/dev/disk/by-uuid" instead,
and since then, I have not had any problems.

I don't recall ever using that number there, only 0 or 1 - mostly 0.
Maybe that is the problem. You could try ato add "auto" to the options
