I was having this problem too. After carefully read the inetutil.readme file, I followed the instruction and inserted the required registry key and granted the required priviledges to the user. Then the telnet work perfectly and no more "failed to init". Hope this help. Nemo. At 01:08 AM 3/1

I downloaded all of the Cygwin stuff Friday, and went through hell trying to get the inetd stuff to work. Win2k, SP2, had set CYGWIN, PATH, and the registry stuff, rebooted, etc ... Searching the archives showed a lot of folks having the same problems : telnetd would start and end immediate

I was just thinking... Previously I had also installed the win2k option pack. Though I did not have the ftpserver or the telnet server running. I only installed it to have a web server. This time when I rebuilt my machine I did not install the option pack. That should not make a difference
