This is maybe a really dumb question – is there a way to drain them?
Does anything control the amount of water that heads out to sea down the St.
Lawrence Seaway, Erie Canal, and so on?

The Moses-Saunders Power Dam ar Cornwall/Massena controls Lake Ontario and the
out flow down stream. There is a lot of controversy over the IJC Plan 2014.
The deciding factor is controlling the spring flooding at Montreal and depths

Next dumb question - assuming someone decides to lower Lake Ontario a
bit, how well does that lower the other lakes, if at all?
It seems like too much flow could flood Montreal. Last time I was in
Montreal the current headed east was pretty strong anyway, so I assume

Joe,
As I understand it, not really. The water levels were really low in
2013 and there was a lot of discussion about how to restrict the flows.
There was discussion of placing restrictive boulders in the St. Clair
river to try to control the outflow from Lakes Superior/Michigan/Huron.

I lived in Montreal for a while and made the trip from there to the Thousand

We have really high tides sometimes, but it goes back out 6 hours later,
not NEXT YEAR. I did not realize the Lakes were variable to that extent.

There is a "Regulating Dam" on the Iroquois Section of the St. Lawrence
Seaway which is there just for that purpose. This river control dam is
built across the river from Rockway Point, located on the north shore of
New York State, directly across from the town, to Point Iroquois. There is

When we were in Montreal I saw few boats. I was informed they are all over at
Lake Champlain. We would have to go the wrong way up the Saint Lawrence to get
to the Great Lakes, I cannot fit under the bridges on the Erie Canal. Your trip
going to the Bahamas sounds like more the right direction!
There are facilities at both ends of the Erie Canal to step/instep the mast.
People do it all the time.

Andrews Trucking (ATL) hauled a lot of them.

It doesn’t.
Niagara Falls and the Welland Canal are the two main “exits” from Lake Erie.
As I understand it, much of the flow going down the Niagara River is diverted
for hydraulic power, and presumably there is more flow now going over the falls
due to the high lake level. Obviously, it’s no
Ontario dumping Doesn’t affect the other lakes. Ontario is fed by 200 foot
falls, so there is no control there.
Lake Erie cycles a lot. You probably saw on the news the remnants of a huge
steel barge that got shucked down the Niagara River last month in a big storm.

We have a different issue. The water cannot be very far off sea level for long,
but that level is headed up and the land itself is sinking. Flooding high tides
are much more frequent than in years past. We also have a river and lake system
upstream of us that is controlled by the Conowingo Dam.
Matthew; that may explain the news report from a couple of weeks ago where a
freighter which had been lodged above the Niagara Falls for some 100 years or
so was dislodged and moved downstream...; don't have a link...;

I hope some has told all of the boaters using the defunct Erie Canal that
they’ll have to find another way south or north depending the season.😜

Bill,
Just a minor correction. The connection between Lake Michigan and Lake
Huron are the Straights of Mackinac. Hydraulically, they are one body
of water.

The Great Lakes in general are very sensitive to high-or-low precipitation
