I’m not sure where to reference the regulations/guidelines on this, so if
someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
I would like to add a couple more batteries and am looking at AGMs due to
their tolerance of being at an angle. Since, as I understand, they are not
Pete,
I believe they do. Also, it’s not a good idea to mix battery types.
All the best,

Hi Pete, my boat has AGMs in the bilge--not in boxes--and my surveyor was fine
with the installation.

I have 4 AGM on my C&C , two laying on their sides and none of them in
boxes. Since AGM are completely sealed no need for boxes or having them
upright.

Hello all,
Slightly off C&C topic but the force 10 2 burner range in our C&C 30 MKII has
lost its igniter function at some point since 1988. Did some digging last
night and found the battery compartment and wire under the stove and in very
bad shape. Seems the battery leaked and dissolved conn
Pete,
The battery box can serve two purposes – prevent a spill and cover the
terminals. As far as I know, the AGMs don’t have to be in a box to protect you
from spills, but you have to cover the terminals in some way to prevent a short
(a box is one of the many ways).
Btw. they are lead-acid,
I don't think a formalized commercially available box is specifically
required. If you find references contrary please let me know. However
"battery boxes" serve multiple purposes beyond acid containment. Properly
engineered and installed boxes ensure that a loop seal is maintained such

You have described exactly what most owners experience. Yes the stove is

Or you can put Lithium AA's in it and they'll last for years and not leak.

You should also be aware that there are different types of chemistry in AGM
batteries. My new ProNautic charger has 4 different programs for charging AGM
batteries, and at least one of those is pretty much identical to the programs
available for lead-acid. But the instruction manual for the char
I have AGM batteries and they are charged exclusively by the alternator or
solar panel. In neither case do I know of a way to regulate the charging for
compatibility with AGM. The charger for shore power is set for AGM, but I
rarely use it. Is there something I should be doing with the altern
Lithium is an interesting option, isn’t it? About quarter of the weight. You
need about half of the Ah capacity (since you can go from 20-100%, instead of
50-80%) and your bulk charging can get you to 100%. But you need some
sophisticated charging and controlling circuitry.

the batteries have a BMS system built in.
Just looking right now. I like the local vendor (Pasco).

one of these Lithium batteries? Are there any other side effects (gasses,

Whoever you buy the propeller from should specify the diameter and pitch.
Different brand props may require a slightly different pitch. A 3 blade
prob will give you more bite, but at an additional cost. If you have a
clearance problem between the blade tip and the hull a 3 blade will allow a

Richard,
If you believe the claims the batteries will outlive all of us, but from
what I have read overcharging them or letting them float at high voltage
really shortens their life. There is lots of information about them on

David,
You need to look at the battery manufacturer's info to know the charge
profile for your batteries. To change the alternator charge profile you'll
probably need to install an external regulator. The most important part of
the profile is the max charging voltage. Most AGMs are limited to 1

Hello all,
I just thought I'd drop a note to let everyone know that Speedseal is now out

Hopefully someone will resurrect the idea!
