You have described exactly what most owners experience.  Yes the stove is
ground.  Yes the AA batteries leak and destroy the connections.  Yes it can
be fixed relatively easy.  You'll probably find that you only use the stove
a handful of times and that after a season the AA battery leaks again and
destroys your repair efforts.

I just use a butane grill lighter.
