I'm thinking of mounting the new speakers in the inspection port covers in
the transom. I hate cutting holes in my boat! I'll wait for the Defender
sale to shop for speakers, but I rarely sail with the stereo on, so I'm not
looking to spend big bucks.

I had not done that. We hardly ever used them and now one has a bad crackle

I did the same - two different set of 'marine' speakers lasted about a year
each before they disintegrated. Now, I have some neat starboard covers for
where they used to be - the inside ones are OK. I guess I never really wanted
outside noise.

Holland Marine Products in Mississauga Ontario stock rolls of 1/16 and 1/8
butyl tape. The store owner can be difficult but is the only source for 1/16
tape near Toronto that I've found.

This is what I'm planning on doing for cockpit speakers:

Joel, we used the inspection ports for speakers on my 33-II, even though they
were not equally spaced apart; in the cockpit you never get tru stereo
anyway...it worked great; I am not a big fan of putting extra holes in the
boat either!

Keep in mind the interference that the magnets in speakers may place on
your steering compass. I have noticed that my hand held VHF radio will
cause the compass Honey's to swing when within about a foot of the compass

Joel, that's where I put my cockpit speakers. The inspection port holes
were ever so slightly bigger than needed for the speakers, but we made it
work. We installed Alpine boat speakers (6.5" SPS-M600, I think

All,
I have a “car” stereo on board the Enterprise, which worked fine with
speakers inside and out, but now I’m removing it — so before you go running
wires and drilling big holes, I suggest you consider this: A portable bluetooth

May I suggest an alternative? I replaced the stereo in the cabin with a new
Bluetooth-capable head unit from West Marine. On those rare occasions when I
desire music in the cockpit, I use an Eton Rugged Rukus Solar Powered Wireless

I had seen the same video - I'm going with the same exciters when
I put in my own stereo this year.
I'm not that concerned about getting perfect sound quality - so
I'm also thinking I'll put the same exciters in the cabin.
I'll remember to use marine wire!
Couldn’t get a C&C, huh? :^)
I’d definitely plan a visit to Nelson’s Dockyard, just for the history.

Yeah, Nelson's dockyard is a great idea Fred.Especially as I was a Brit before I became civilized I've never sailed a Dufour, so 2nd best is OK too. I've chartered C&C 115's out of Sidney, Vancouver Island before, but I've never seen a C&C for charter anywhere else.
I had two 12" squares of Sunbrella made up to use as sun covers for the
cockpit speakers. They keep them clean and mostly dry when not in use. I
think they will last longer this way.

Thanks for all the input. I will summarize what I have found so far about
engine replacements.
Much to my surprise pricing for new Yanmar engines with similar hp (55 hp)
to the old engine pricing is better in Canada compared to the US.
With "boat show" pricing I have been quoted $14,900 US (list $1
