My Standard Horizon VHF needs to be sent back to thr company for the second
time in just over 2 years. Once again it will not charge. I'm thinking of
replacing it. Any recommendations? Are the DSC versions readily available
yet?

The primary winches on my 35-3 are set up just in front of the wheel
(adjacent to the turning blocks for the sheets). There's not much space
for a couple of burly trimmers back there - so I was considering swapping
the primaries with where the spin sheet winches are now, further forward.

Joel,
PHRF of the Chesapeake is going to require DSC handhelds very soon. They
are readily available, even at West Marine. ICOM has a nice one.

Not cheap though.. $299.99.

Tim,
My primaries are in the forward location. They are Barient 28+ models. My
traveler is on the cabin top, which keeps the mainsheet trimmer in the
companionway.and out of the way of the burly trimmers that I have.
I have Barient 27 secondaries, which we use for spinnaker work, unless t

Went for a standard Horizon years ago and they were totally unresponsive when
the damn thing stopped charging after a couple of months. They lost a customer.
I haven't heard anything good about the quality of their products since that
would get me back.

I have both Standard Horizon and Icom HTs.
The Icom has better sound both receiving and transmitting.
The HX-370S is rugged enough to pound in nails with and was easily modded to do
ham radio frequencies with a program SH gave me for free.
Icom is nowhere near that cooperative when trying to modi
I have a standard horizon 851 with DSC and I too have had problems with
charging. It was covered under warranty and it came with a AA adapter so I
wasn't completely out of a radio. SH said the battery stopped working
because I left it on the charger 24/7. I wired it to my fixed VHF so that

Listers,
Charging problems might be due to old batteries unable to retain a
charge and no longer supported by the manufacturer. Ni-Cad lady in
California will rebuild the old batteries. The price is not cost
prohibitive IMHO. As I recall they will give a price quote over the
phone.

Ray,
Thanks. The unit is under warranty. Apparently the SH charging bases are
unreliable.

This is always a crazy topic but thought it worthwhile for this group given the
experience level. Before I start running copper ribbon all over the boat, does
anyone have any great ideas for a counterpoise? The boat has plastic
thru-hulls and tanks. I could include the the metal holding and f

If this is not possible you might want to look at a KISS radial system:

Hi Tim
I've got Barient 28 winches close to the wheel, and a pair of slightly
smaller winches ahead of that. The 28s are not self tailing, the others
are. I'd prefer they were reversed - but that is mainly a solo sailing
consideration, it would be nice to have self tailing next to the wheel.
I have bronze screen about 3x4 feet under the tuner and also tied to a
bronze thru-hull. It has worked well for about 10 years now.

The KISS may be a good bet as well.

Ii've not seen the kiss system before. It sounds almost too good to be true.
Has anyone actually used it?

I have not, but the RF theory behind it is sound. You can make one with
different lengths of wire if you don't want to buy it.

They told me that the bases do not have over charge protection. Seems like
poor engineering.

I bet that this does not apply to the US, but in Canada, Shell sells its
premium (Gold) gasoline without any ethanol added. It is about 15% more
expensive than the normal gas, but this is what I use for my snow blower,
lawn mower and the motorboat. It is certainly worth it not to need the clean
