I have a standard horizon 851 with DSC and I too have had problems with charging. It was covered under warranty and it came with a AA adapter so I wasn't completely out of a radio. SH said the battery stopped working because I left it on the charger 24/7. I wired it to my fixed VHF so that the charger only turns on when the fixed radio is turned on. I haven't had a problem in the 2 years since.
Some things to consider about DSC portables. First, for the DSC to work you have to register the MMSI which is also associated with the vessel. So lending and sharing means that the radio is not properly associated with the vessel. Second, once the MMSI is registered you will likely have to return the unit to the manufacturer if it becomes necessary to change the number (sell, transfer to another vessel). Third, despite having a GPS and other GPS features, you will be hard pressed to find one that has mapping features. Uniden made one called the Mistic which can be found on ebay from time to time for ~$100. I figure if/when I have to ditch, it would be nice to have a mapping GPS. Hopefully a handheld in addition to a VHF, but if only one survives the ditch and has power.... Unlike my standard horizon, my mystic won't float and doesn't have visual aids like glow in the dark and water activated SOS strobe.
