In my experience, there are three ways to get a sail number: 1) Pick a number that you like that is less than 5 digits, and stick with it. I've known a few people who elected to do this - but that was primarily because they did not know that the sail numbers actually have a certain logic to them.

The number that came with the sails, all 12 of them, on my 35 MKII is 12699, also a US number I believe. Judging from all the gear and sails that came with Alianna I would say someone had outfitted her pretty well for racing before I got her. It was not the previous owner so it's hard to find out
