Thanks all!
Now that I have your collective input on the 1/2 ounce chute, the
forecast changed to 10-15 gusting to 20. I'll be ready either way!

Joel,

and instead find another boat that has similar polars and just match
their angles.

would you want to ruin a good 1/2 oz spinnaker just so you don't have to
change it.
I use an old 0.5oz in a sock for cruising, with the reasoning being that I
wouldn't want to fly a spinnaker in stronger winds while cruising anyway.
It turns out I do... This year I have had it up in 15-20 true, but only
close to downwind, and only because it's old anyway. I would take it down

Joel,
Ideal angle depends on wind speed. In light air you have to sail
hotter, in heavy air you can sail more dead downwind. Key is to
maximize VMG (wind based). If you don't have instruments that can
As long as I can carry my 3/4 oz spinnaker, I would not use my 1/2 oz. Why
would you want to ruin a good 1/2 oz spinnaker just so you don't have to change

don't carry my 1/2 oz above seven knots apparent.

Yes my plotter can tell me VMG, but it seems to indicate that there is a
pretty wind range where angle does not matter, at least with the jib, so the

What is the maximum wind speed for a 1/2 oz chute?
What is the ideal apparent wind angle on a downwind leg to get to the
leeward mark on a 35/3? 140 degrees 150 degrees 160 degrees? Assuming
about a 10 knot wind and calm seas.
