Joel,

Ideal angle depends on wind speed.  In light air you have to sail hotter, in 
heavy air you can sail more dead downwind.  Key is to maximize VMG (wind 
based).  If you don't have instruments that can calculate VMB (wind based), set 
a mark in your GPS 20 miles downwind and sail to maximize WCV (waypoint closure 
velocity) which most GPS's call VMG.

I carry my 1/2 (actually a 0.6 ounce) ounce to about 10 knots true.
