Right, the J30 is close but so is the 35 MKII so I figure Joel can use those polar numbers I sent as targets, or not if he chooses

For a first race, I'd ignore them. and instead find another boat that has similar polars and just match their angles. I've found that J-30s seem to have nearly the same wind angle as the 35-3 for each wind speed. Just find out who's racing this weekend, and see if there is a published polar plot for that boat (google my friend....google). Then, follow their lead if they seem to be a well run boat and know/follow their angles. -Keith -----Original Message----- From: Dennis C. In light air you have to sail hotter, in heavy air you can sail more dead downwind. Key is to maximize VMG (wind based). If you don't have instruments that can calculate VMB (wind based), set a mark in your GPS 20 miles downwind and sail to maximize WCV (waypoint closure velocity) which most GPS's call VMG. I carry my 1/2 (actually a 0.6 ounce) ounce to about 10 knots true. Dennis C. What is the ideal apparent wind angle on a downwind leg to get to the leeward mark on a 35/3? 140 degrees 150 degrees 160 degrees? Assuming about a 10 knot wind and calm seas.
