Danny,
When my buddy and I install Harken furlers, all the fasteners get red
threadlocker. That may be why the fasteners on the torque tube are tight.
Touche' has a Harken Size 1 Mk III that was installed in 1999. Still works
great. My buddy and I routinely replace other brands with Harkens.
Ok, so the update...
I took the sail down, removed the furling line and flushed everything
with Dawn liquid soap and fresh water.
I installed the newer furling line, I had onboard, that came from the
main boom furler.
I checked alignment from the drum and added a block to adjust that a bit
“Ease the sheets, turn upwind, whatever but don't winch the furling line.”
Actually, I find that turning downwind is much easier - no flogging sail, less
force on the sheet and you might even shadow your jib with the main. Easy.
Other than that I fully agree with Dennis. A big point: never use a

in fact. I can tell a difference before and after.

Danny,
If I recall correctly, Harken recommends a minimum divergence between the
forestay and halyard of 7 degrees.

So, I take pictures constantly of various parts of the boat and
systems. I went back through and found that the halyard being used is
actually coming out of one of the spin sheaves. so, the first thing I'm
going to do is get that back into the sheave right behind the headstay

I find my Furlex furler gets hard to wind the sail in when I have the jib
halyard fully tight. If I ease the Halyard a couple of inches, it turns much
easier. It is one more step when dousing the sail, but my halyard leads aft to
the cockpit so it isn't a huge issue.
I also suspect the furler

Ok, so, I did check the swivel before raising the sail and it seemed
fine. That was only about 3 weeks ago. I think dropping the sail and
flushing is probably the best, 1st, line of action. Someone else
mentioned maybe supporting the mast with the halyard and releasing the

Mark has identified two probable culprits.
Drop the sail and flush both the swivel and the drum. Flush liberally with
water from multiple angles. Spray some McLube in both if you like. It's
optional but a good idea.

Hello all,
I'm having some trouble with my old Harken Roller furler. It seems to

the sticking point and I can still roll it in by hand without too much
effort. I'm going down in Saturday to play around with it. Do any o
Frank,
If Mark doesn't go for that MK I swivel, I would love to have it. I am in
Portland. We haven't met, but I race regularly on the J42 Velocity and
occasionally on other boats. My wife and I also have a 30-2 "Osprey" at
PYC.
Thanks!

Hold on Mark,
I have an old Mk I swivel that you can have for the postage, shipping and
handling.
A lot less than $175 but I am on the West Coast.
Interested?

You'll need to know the Unit and Mark. I'm going to guess it's a MK1. Is
the drum guard chrome? If so, it's a MKI.
Probably a Unit 0 or Unit 1.
The Harken rep will help you identify it.

Never heard of a swivel failure on a Harken. Let us known how this goes.

Had a catastrophic failure of my Harken roller furler today.
Last 3 times out the furler has been sticking a bit - thought it got
better with tightening my backstay, but then same problem again.
Dropped the jib - furler spun freely with no sail so I figured I was
catching something up top. R
