Ok, so the update...

I took the sail down, removed the furling line and flushed everything with Dawn liquid soap and fresh water.

I installed the newer furling line, I had onboard, that came from the main boom furler.

I checked alignment from the drum and added a block to adjust that a bit better.

I tried to take the sleeve off the top of the furling drum that allows fore-stay adjustment but, I could not budge those screws. I think they need to come out and get replaced with something better than a slotted machine screw head. The tension seemed ok (at least to me) so, I let that go.

I put everything back together and the furling is working much smoother. Unfurls nicely and a reasonable effort to furl manually without gloves. I'd say the exercise was a success. I'd still like to service it more fully this coming off season. the good news is that I really see no reason I can't get plenty more use out of this old furler if I stay up on the maintenance.
