We own Zia, a 1975 30MK1. We keep the boat at home in Mayo Maryland and
race the Wednesday night series at Pirates Cove Yacht Club on the West
River. Stiff as a church, nimble and fast.

Hi Ryan,
Do you have a split backstay? That will force a hole or a slit in the
bimini to make it work. I can't tell from your pic - nice looking boat by
the way. I also have a 30MK1 and am looking for a good bimini solution that
won't get in the way while racing but provides some protection fr
Hi Randy,
I replaced the old gate valves on my 30-1 this winter. While trying to
unscrew them, I ended up spinning the actual thru-hull so I replaced those
as well. I had a devil of a time finding the replacements since on my boat
#305, they were flush to the hull. I found some flush thru hulls
I received the blessing from the Admiral to equip Zia with a folding prop
this season. I have been looking at our options and the Gori 2 blade geared
prop 11.5 X 8 looks like it would do the job.
Before I pull the trigger on this, I would like to check with the list for
opinions/experiences on b
Thanks so much for all the info Rick.
I have some Groco flushmount thru hulls that will fit the hole but have a
flange diameter that is smaller than the originals (whatever brand they
might be). I also have the Groco ball valves that fit on the thru hulls and
will work fine for the drains. The
I am trying to find the mfg. for the cockpit drain brass thru hulls on my
1975 30 MK1.
They are flush to the bottom of the hull and have a flange diameter of 3.5
inches and a 1.25 inch hole. I have tried Groco and Perko but neither has
the correct size although they both have brass flush mount ve
Howdy Listers,
I am replacing the through hull cockpit drains on my 30 MK1. This project
started with replacing the old gate valves - and it has sort of expanded
(shall we say) from there. Mission creep!
The flange measures 3.5 inches on the outside of the hull with a 1.25
diameter hole. The
My 1975 30-1, Zia is up for a nice Christmas gift this year - a folding
prop.
Any recommendations for a good folder that will still give me decent
performance in forward and reverse? I don't know the current two blade prop
specs but she is being pushed by a smooth running Atomic 4.
Thanks for
Howdy listers,
Last year I had my forestay replaced (for a new roller furler) and it ended
up being longer than the original by maybe about 4 or 5 inches . I have
adjusted the forestay all the way down but I still need plenty of backstay
to keep it all tight. So now my mast rake is about 15 i
Hi Kevin - I had the same problem with the Barient primaries on my 30 MK1.
It would have cost $75 each to have then done at a shop and it would have
taken weeks. So I chose the cheap alternative and it worked like a charm.
I used a sharp nail punch and lightly punched a bunch of indentations in a

Hi Tom - I notice the same thing on my 30-1 - as I increase revs the stern
squats. I have a two blade fixed prop on an Atomic 4. I sometimes adjust
the throttle by looking over the stern rather than the speedo - kinda handy.
At high revs my exhaust is completely underwater while it is a few inche

Hi Curtis,
Are you talking about replacing just the windows in the aluminum frames on
your 30-1? I replaced the windows and splines on my 1975 30-1 last year
and it was a breeze. I actually was able to use the same windows as they
cleaned up very nicely with a plastic polish. It would have bee
Howdy all,
I installed the sound exciters on my 30 MK1 after watching Ted's video. In
a word, fantastic. They sound great and they are totally protected under
the cockpit. No drilling or cutting needed and cheap to boot. They attach
with double stick tape rings - I plan on working up a better
During a race last week one of my crew tried to muscle in the genoa furler
while it was fouled in the spin halyard. Pow went the feeder extrusion. I
purchased a repair kit from Rig Rite for $300 clams (ouch). Then during the
'repair' I busted off the forestay in the main bearing (double ouch).
Hi Rick,
I replaced the seals on my 1975 30 MK1 last year. It was an absolute
breeze. Got the parts from South shore yachts - just measure and order.
Take out the old gaskets and clean the aluminum frames. If your windows are
shot (mine were fine) just use the old windows to as a template for t
Hi Steve. I have to chime in on the Cat v Mono debate. There are good
cats and not so good cats (we call em dogs - or condomarans) - just like
monos. I spent 5 years and 30K miles on a Switch 51 cat with my wife and
two daughters. My boat prior to that was a C&C 27! We are now back in the
USA
Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum having an auction next Sat in St. Mikes.
Check this video and around 1:50 for the C&C.

Hi Mark,
Just bought a 1975 30 MK1 myself. It had a sagging mast step which I have
repaired. The mast is still out and I am fixing and polishing etc to get
her launched in the next few weeks. They are pretty sweet boats to my eye.
Mine was a bit of a project (mainly the mast step) so it was on
Hi Paul,
That pic looks familiar. I just bought a 1975 30 MK1 with a bad mast step.
In my case the wood underneath was rotted and the wooden step had collapsed
a few inches. This one looks to be still holding up. There is a hole in
the aluminum shoe directly under the mast to allow drainage int
Thanks for all of the great ideas on mast maintenance/upgrading. I now have
a much longer to-do list.

The mast on my '75 30 MK1 is out of the boat while I rebuild the mast step.
So I plan to replace those nasty old wire halyards with some high tech
stuff. I will also replace the bulb in my tri-color mast head light with an
LCD. I would like to get a wind instrument as well, but I have not foun
Howdy,
I want to add a bimini for my cockpit. My boat has the traveler just
forward of the wheel and the main sheet will be in the way of any decent
sized bimini.
Any 30 MK1 owners out there with a bimini that could give me some pointers?

Hi Mike,
I just bought a '75 30MK1 with a sagging mast step. After pulling the mast
and taking out the old mast step, I found a deep hole that could never drain
back to the bilge pump. It was full of a foul smelling black goo that had
probably been there for 37 years stinkin' up the joint. Afte
Thanks very much to all who sent in ideas and advice on possibly jacking up
my mast for the step repair. The question was rendered moot for me when the
boatyard pulled the mast this morning. I had mentioned that I wanted it
pulled, although I expected them to notify me. Well - I think the advic
Howdy Listers,
I am new to the list and the new owner of a 1975 30 Mk 1. Overall she is in
decent shape with a fwc A4 that runs well. Aside from needing major
cleaning/polishing and lots of minor fixit stuff, she has one big ugly
problem, the mast step is sagging and needs to be rebuilt. I
