Thanks, Jim. I'll let you know when I'm back in the water. It's a fine idea:)

Ouch!
I remember that shoal from years back when I was crewing the Prince of
Wales race -- in light winds every boat was trying to cut the corner
headed out of the harbor.
Looking over the side into the clear water (I was working the mast) I
was saw boulders sliding past the boat. When I raise

It may simply be a loose belt? There is a tensioner for that if it is a 4000 Plus.Another bandaid fix is to shockcord the clutch lever so it can't release on you. Check the mechanicals first. RayMarine recommends washing it out with fresh water periodically. Good luck. ChuckResolute1990 C&C 34
To open the wheel unit, put a large flat screwdriver or pry between the two
circular segments and pry them apart. This will expose the drive belt, idler
pulleys and the tensioning clutch lever. The problem you are having is
mechanical.

I've seen one boat cut through there but it was a Bayfield 29, very shallow
draft.
I hope the damage isn't too expensive to fix.

I had exactly the same problem. Changed out the wheel unit with a new-to-me
(but better condition) unit. Thought that solved the problem. Did it again! I
found that if I switch off the power to the controller I do not have the
problem. I know only switch on the auto helm power when I am using it

I had a problem with my autopilot today I could use some feedback on. For the last few weeks, the lever that engages/disengages the autopilot would periodically release so that the autopilot ceased being able to turn the wheel. Once engaged, it seemed to work fine, but the initial engagement seem
My final 2 cents... (unless I keep thiinking) Really, I think a Class A
receiver is a good thing. I think a good radar system is more
important. Outside of highly tamed areas of the world AIS is pretty
much optional even for huge fishing vessels.

Personally, I think Class B transponders are a waste of money.
Many folks who have Class B transponders are so proud of them that they
leave them on all the time, thus flooding the channel with worthless
traffic. The boat is sitting at the dock, broadcasting "Under Way"
while the owner is sit

Can you install a plastic bulkhead fitting with a gasket even if you have to
enlarge the hole? If you install a threaded bulkhead fitting, you can adapt it
to whatever hose size you need. See:

Your water tank will be polyethylene, not polypropylene, and nothing will
