A good idea would be to cover your shroud with quarter inch plastic tubing for
the first, say, five feet. With this, the sheet will rub against the plastic
rather than the cable. No chaffing this way. It's good to have it anyway to
prevent chaffing all week at the slip when the genoa is furled a

That is what I did - aluminum over wood. Also note I made the step wider so it
no longer tries to bend the wood in the middle. The center 1/3 of my wood
portion could rot away with no ill effect.

Look at the next one up and duplicate that one. Generally the bottom batten
is stiffer than the top, but the bottom two are usually the same.
Don't know if you have 'fat' (about an inch wide) or 'skinny' (half an inch)
so that's why the look and duplicate.

If the next batten pocket up is the same length as the one for the batten you
lost, then it is a good bet that both were
identical. An identical batten would in this case be close enough until you
have a chance to check with your sail maker, as was
suggested earlier.

However, I have two reasons for going back with wood: one is the hope to get
the job finished this weekend since I haven't sailed all summer and metal
fabrication would take a couple weeks longer
