I have two small points to add to what has been amply said already.
First, those columns (like the pre-filter 6000) are nice to use with
ion-exchange or metal affinity columns on FPLCs, attached right after a
superloop. Not gel filtration columns. Second, for small samples loaded
on gel filtrat
Dear Anita,
As has been stated in another post I think, it is not a good idea to use a
guard column in front of a Superdex column or any gel filtration column. It
will dilute the sample and decrease the resolution and depending on the nature
of the aggregate and guard column it might just clog.
I think the typical Akta configuration has the prefilter installed after
the mixing pump, but before the sample loop. That is where it is on mine at
least. It wouldn't stop sample precipitate from loading on the column.
Technically, it would probably still work if you installed the prefilter
after
Anita,

Well, Pharmacia (now, GE) used to sell such a guard column for FPLC
prior to Akta.
And I remember buying adaptors to be able to connect the guard column
and FPLC columns to an HPLC system.
So all the tools exist.
But keep in mind that a guard column volume must in all cases be kept
minimal to a
Hi Anita,
never heared about Guard columns for Superdex columns. These guard
columns are usually for HPLC columns (RP) or Silica High pressure
gelfiltration columns like from Tosoh Bioscience and part of the acutal
column itself, though replaceable.
