Dear Mike,
At Evotec (a UK site), we gave up using GE to service
our GE instruments (!) due to problems with their bureaucracy. Agilent
offer service contracts for Aktas that are competitively priced and
are a work-alike in our experience.
For call-outs, they sub-contract the usual

I have used and worked on both the Bio-Rad and Akta systems. It is
really a matter of opinion, but they both get the job done.
Exterior:
The Akta systems look nice with metal exteriors while the Bio-Rads look
a little cheap being plastic. Both are really heavy, though.

As a personal touch, I also find Biorad software much more intuitive.
This discussion, of course, is similar to comparing car brands -
experiences differ.
What mystifies me is a need for a service maintenance contract at all. Has
hardware become so much less reliable than in the past?

Personally, my experience with Biorad was very positive. For instance,
we had the switch valve motor burn out and they sent us the motor for
$150 or so while they could have charged us full price
I know all these because I’ve got a letter from GE regarding my

Dear Mike,
strange - I just filed a repair job with labcrew for our old ÄKTA Prime. A
technician was in house (for other reasons) when it stopped working and he
was confident that he can replace our pump (rotary unit, as he called
it)... Well let's hope he really does...
On the other hand,
out a service
call. GE probably will support AKTAprime plus for a few more years. --Chun

It depends on how your system is configured - primary considerations being
tubing length and tubing inner diameter (AKTA can come with at least three
different PEEK tube diameters, depending on what you purchased it for). New
systems often arrive with at least one tube-change kit (i.e. pre-cut tube
Hi Jim,
If I remember correctly the delay volume from the pumps to the top of the
column is roughly 8 ml for Äkta Purifier, Explorer and also Prime. The actual
volume from the bottom of the column to the fractionator, or more important
from the UV cell to the fractionator depends on the tubing
Hello all,
Does anyone have a rough estimate (or has anyone actually determined) an
average dead/delay volume between buffers run on an AKTA Prime FPLC? We are
attempting to overexpress/isolate a smaller His-tagged transmembrane protein,
and require running several detergent buffers in success

Hi,
Don't forget system losses (friction in the tubing). An empty AKTA prime
typically eats up about 0.25 MPa so your maximum is closer to 0.7MPa loss
on column.

Dear Frank,
AKTA prime delivers a max. pressure of 1 MPa. The 24 ml SEC columns can
be run at pressures
up to 1.5 (S200) or even 3 MPa (superose 12). If your column is in pretty
good shape, expect to
reach 0.9 MPa at 0.4 ml/min for S200. So you can use an AKTA prime, but

Are you sure that you want AKTA anything? They are so expensive.
We have had good service from the old style ("HR") Bio-Rad Bio-Logic
chromatography systems. The new ones are called "DuoFlow".

Dear all,
I need to decide between buying an AKTA prime and an AKTA FPLC from GE health
care. I understand AKTA prime is a low-pressure system, but because it is too
much cheaper than AKTA FPLC, it is still very attractive to me.
I will mainly use it for Nickel columns and gel filtration colum
