Be very wary about Linux and IDE Tape Drives. I bought a Sony SDX-560 (IDE, 80/208 GB, 12MB/s) for 800 US$. Unfortunately it would only work using PIO mode on Linux even though DMA mode worked fine on Windows. There is a SATA version of this drive that I haven't tried, but suspect it would work

You've mentioned IDE but haven't said why, maybe you want IDE because you don't want to purchase a SCSI adapter? You also haven't said what you mean by cheap :) HP make an external USB2 drive that holds 20Gb uncompressed which retails for AUD$1309. The 36Gb uncompressed version is AUD$1554. They
