Ah, indeed! :D
I was just having a discussion with a few people earlier today about how
many times it seems like devs just toss stuff in there out of tradition, or
status. It would be really great to see apps just taking out needless menu
options instead of just trying to hide them
But I do like
Of course this couldn't be applied to something like gimp, but for
most applications, it would be a good thing. But then again gimp isn't
included by default in Ubuntu anymore...

"cluttered to put every single thing in one title bar drop down" Very much so!!!
Stuffing huge menu's into a drop down list is about as annoying as
having to use menu's in the first place. Doing so forces the
applications to clean them selves up, in a matter of speaking.

Great mockup David!
However, my main fear with that is it sort of hides those options under a
lot of layers. My goal is more then just getting rid of the menu bars, its
getting rid of stupidly repetitive unnecessary commands from easily
cluttering view while at the same time increasing functionali

That could work. It would require a change to GTK+ to allow tooltips to
show on focus.
As an extension to that
BTW, using gcalc as the example again, tooltips give the available key
shortcut. is this a good approach to discover-ability?

I agree, although determining what's most commonly used is easie

I know, I know, we just had an announcement about changing menu's over to
global menu's for the UNE. But seriously, how necessary is 4 menus in the
calculator application "gcalctool"? The only menu options that have anything
to do with actual calculator options are under the view menu. The rest is
