I rebooted, and tried used aplay to play a sound, and it did not crash, though
I still did not hear anything. So I tried launching into X using the stock nv
driver rather then the accelerated nbvidia driver, still no luck with aplay,
but xmms locked up the machine again.

Don't run X. Just try:
aplay file.wav
It's good to know if the NVdriver has anything to do with it.
My setup is almost identical to yours and I don't have problems similar to
yours. Truth is I am using the newer nvidia dr
