I am also using ALSA with a SoundBlaster live and NVidia driver. I don't
experience lockups now (although I used to with older NVidia drivers).
Maybe try just using the standard non 3D "nv" driver that comes with X
and make sure the NVdriver module doesn't get loaded (you'll probably
have to reboot since I don't think the two drivers get along very well
in the same session). This will at least "untaint" your kernel and also
confirm as to whether the NVidia drivers are causing the problem.

Often times when you get a lock up the kernel is still alive, so the
magic Sysreq keys should work if your kernel is compiled with them
enabled (<Alt><PrintScrn><s> to sync mounted drives, <Alt><PrintScrn><u>
to remount drives read only, <Alt><PrintScrn><b> to reboot the machine).
Sometimes there is useful output from the kernel (oops information, etc)
but you wouldn't normally see it because programs are dead. I was able
to get rather valuable information by setting up my laptop as a serial
console to my desktop machine
(/usr/src/linux/Documentation/serial-console.txt). I think you can also
use an ethernet connected machine instead, but I'm not sure how to do
this. Once you get oops output it can be processed with ksymoops to find
out where the crash is occuring. This should be done without the
NVdriver loaded since it "taints" the kernel. Good luck figuring things
out.
