Does it work if not running X? What about playing a WAV file with aplay.
Don't run X. Just try:
aplay file.wav
It's good to know if the NVdriver has anything to do with it.
My setup is almost identical to yours and I don't have problems similar to
yours. Truth is I am using the newer nvidia driver (version 1.0-4191, that
has its name changed to nvidia.o).
