I rebooted, and tried used aplay to play a sound, and it did not crash, though 
I still did not hear anything. So I tried launching into X using the stock nv 
driver rather then the accelerated nbvidia driver, still no luck with aplay, 
but xmms locked up the machine again. 

I rebooted and tried again, with -almost- the same results, but this time, 
aplay gave me an error message (xmms still crashed the system):
