I managed to finally successfully install the ALSA
drivers and use the snd-intel8x0 module on my Sony
PCG-GRX550. It also uses the AC97 codec. I went into
ALSAMIXER and unmuted all the levels and rose the
volumes to full. I could really here my speaker beep.
However, The CD player, XMMS, and A

This is a problem with RedHat kernels. Do this while compiling the
alsa-driver:
./configur
I installed the kernel update RPMS. I recompiled the
alsa driver RPM with the new kernel. I also installed
the alsa driver from source. The version.h problem
went away with the kernel update. However, when I
try and install the module snd I get:
/lib/modules/2.4.20-20.7custom/kernel/sound/acor
I managed to install all the ALSA RPMS and then
recompiled the driver RPM for my architecture. Things
went smoothly until I tried to load the modules which
generated unresolved symbol errors. Suprisingly, the
RPMS fixed the version.h problem I was having. I

1. Downloaded kernel-source-2.4.20

I'm having what appears to be a common problem. When
doing the ./configure for the drivers, I get the
message
checking for kernel version... The file
/lib/modules/2.4.20-19.9/build/include/linux/version.h
does not exist.
Please, install the package with full kernel sources
for your distribution
