Which kernel are you running on? I have found that for the GRX5X0 line
you need to have ACPI in the kernel or else the sound chip interrupts
are not routed properly. 

For a kernel with ACPI (and a lot more) you should take a look at:
  http://www-ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/
It works in my GRX580...
