I managed to finally successfully install the ALSA drivers and use the snd-intel8x0 module on my Sony PCG-GRX550. It also uses the AC97 codec. I went into ALSAMIXER and unmuted all the levels and rose the volumes to full. I could really here my speaker beep. However, The CD player, XMMS, and ALSAPLAYER all do not play sound files. They are active but no soud is coming from the speakers except the system beep. I can faintly hear a background hisssss. All the modules are loaded. All the channels are unmuted. Yet there is no sound. The only clue I have is that sox reported that it could not find the device /dev/audio. Even dmesg acknowledges that the snd-intel8x0 driver is loaded.
