The latest stable Kubuntu repositories provides alsamixergui which
depends on FLTK1.1.
I installed it and it at least creates a GUI. I have no idea if it functions
or has the bug the OP sites.
I'm sure it must be available as source if someone wanted to
sic limit of the hardware.
The analogue performance of the cards is surely still excellent, and the
limits of the driver sound interesting as a project to learn driver
development, just I never got to it.

And FYI, I did compile a custom kernel (used the .config from the base
ubuntu kernel and upped the clock to 1000hz... that was the only change).

I've got a couple of USB audio devices. Mine are really cheap things
that do USB to optical conversion. I think they both were a little
difficult to set up originally.
I don't see Wavelength here as a supported device:

Name one pcm.analog, and the other pcm.digital or whatever you want to use.
Then use aplay -D (analog or digital) /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav
to use them.
