Hi Moshe and all, OK. I stopped ALSA, unloaded the modules, then deleted the /dev/dsp* files then rebooted, and reloaded the modules., and unmuted and turned up levels with alsa mixer still no sound from XMMS. my speakers are definatley working as they are humming and the volume control i
