OK..... I stopped ALSA, unloaded the modules, then deleted the /dev/dsp* files
then rebooted, and reloaded the modules., and unmuted and turned up levels with alsa mixer
still no sound from XMMS.
my speakers are definatley working as they are humming and the volume control in XMMS makes the hum/hiss louder and softer. in alsamixer unmuting some of the things makes the speakers click/pop they are at full volume!
any more ideas ?????
I have no /dev/dsp or /dev/sound/dsp this is probably bad...right?
cheers
Dan
Well, you've got a different configuration than I have. In my system,
/dev/dsp -> /dev/sound/dsp /dev/adsp -> /dev/sound/adsp
and there are no files such as /dev/dsp{0,3}. I don't know what the snddevices script does, but if it creates /dev/dsp*, then you might have the wrong /dev files created. devfs, in conjunction with loading the snd-pcm-oss modules, will create the /dev/dsp files and point them to the correct location.
Unless someone else on the list objects, I think you should consider stopping alsa, unloading the modules, deleting the /dev/dsp* files, and then reloading the modules to let devfs create the proper links (and you'll have to chgrp or chmod them again.) In fact, I seem to recall doing this on my system, but I don't have my notes.
