ALSA sound has been mysteriously non functional for some time on my red hat 8.0 linux box, with the commercial Xig.com Xserver, (for hardware stereo graphics) despite "looking" like it is installed and "working" just fine (for example XMMS plays mp3s with ALSA sound out plugin but no sound, all alsa and other mixer settings are up)
While upgrading my redhat linux 8.0 box with the red hat up2date client for new rpms,
My ALSA sound suddenly started working: XMMS gives sound with the ALSA plugin and the gnome desktop sounds work!
System
Athalon 2GHz, 1Gb RAM, redhat 8.0, via technologies VT8233A onboard sound (via82xx ALSA driver), ALSA 0.9.3c drivers, libs, oss, tool, utils, all compiled and installed from sources.
After my redhat up2date upgrade, my commercial X server from Xig.com (summit accelerated X) was broken, because the update has installed new XFree86 software and OpenGL and MESA stuff. But the GUI was (mostly) working using XFree86. Graphical login worked and suddenly there were sounds from the gnome desktop and XMMS!!!
Then I reinstalled my commercial Xserver, and then no more sound. :-(
Perhaps the problem might be some sort of kernel module conflict, as the Summit X server requires a kernel module to be running called xsvc (also supplied by xig.com). This module appears in my modules.conf as seen below
Is this a possibility ??????? Can anyone shed any light on this?
