Ok..you told this "aplay & XMMS doesn't work". I tell in my message
that this problem is solved for aplay and another apps, or for xmms and
mplayer or mplayer and another apps. But it doesn't work with emulated
games, natives games (wich uses /dev/dsp as default sound device); how

Well, it *seems* I found the solution to my own problem.
I removed all OSS API/emulation support from my kernel.
Everything works perfectly now. I even got xine to output a nice DTS
signal to my external DTS decoders, and it sounds beautiful.

That got Noatun to play back oggs and mp3s! Woohoo! Only now when I play audio CDs
with KsCD, they show as playing but I don't hear anything. I checked all the volume
controls I could find, including the one on KsCD. Oh well, I guess I'll try to
figure that out after I return from vacation.

The problem is that it doesn't work like it should I have xmms alsa plugin set to
default, xmms & madplay won't work concurrently, same with mplayer, etc... for
example, with xmms playing, and executing madplay, madplay will simply wait for xmms
to stop before starting mplayer and unreal
I have 2.6.4, and latest alsa, and extigy. I am currently using exaudio, but would
prefer to use alsa as I had in the past. What is the level of support provided extigy
w/2.6.4, and anyone have a howto on setting it up?(I only saw some stuff about it with
2.4.x)

Problem solved (for aplay, but no for emulated games with wineX). To use
xmms with aplay, only that you need is change your config file .asoundrc
and set alsa plugin for xmms with sound device "default" (go to options

"defaul
I have the same problem. I can use multiple mplayer sessions, with xmms;
but when the program use dsp device as default, the dmix doesn't work.
Xmms setting in "default" can be solve the problem with mplayer or
another program that can be use alsa plugin.
The same problem is with emulated games

Well it turned out that I had the two cards confused. snd-card-0 was actually the pci card and snd-card-1 was onboard. Now I can play wav files on both /dev/dsp0 and /dev/dsp1 .. However, I am not able to record from /dev/dsp1 line in (the pci card).
I've checked to make sure line-in was not mute
Hi,
I have managed to run alsa 0.9.8 with snd-ice 1712.
I would like to use the second midi port from the ICH4 onboard audio
from MSI 845E Max Inetl Chipset, but this enables only my terratec ewx
24/96, while the AC'97 with ICH4 does not send/receive any midi.
I tried to run alsaconf script, bu
I have my nforce2 mobo (mcp-t southbridge) set up to use dmix, and I can play aplay on
2 seperate consoles at once. However I cannot play aplay and another source, nor two
other sources at once. Example: cannot play aplay & madplay simultaneously; aplay &
XMMS doesn't work; XMMS & madplay do not
Hi Simon,
I have a powerbook g4. This might be a simple solution. If something
else like esd is using the device I've seen aplay behave the way you
describe. You might try:
lsof /dev/dsp
lsof /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p
or something like that to see if the port is being used.

Hi,
I'm doing my first ever linux install on a mac (gentoo - I've asked this
question on the gentoo forums, no response) and have got as far as getting
sound working.
ALSA *appears* to be configured properly, and alsamixer shows the card. 'aplay
some.wav' seems to play the wav with no errors,
I have a Creative Soundblaster Live! card (regular SB Live, 5 outputs,
front, rear, mic, input, spdif). All of them are 1/8" outputs. I have a
1/8" -> RCA converter, which has a digital audio cable plugged into it,
and the other end into my digital receiver.
I have tried compiling the ALSA snd_e
Thanks for the help. Unfortunately, it's still not working. I made the
changes you suggested, but when I do the modprobe I get:
/lib/modules/2.4.21-xfs/alsa/snd-cmipci.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ p

I would upgrade to 2.6.4 and some current ALSA.

cards_limit=2 is OK.
