uninstall alsa-0.5 and download/install alsa-driver0.9. version 5 has no
support for it any longer (it has been deprecated) Although version 9 is
beta, it runs well on at least my system, and many others i assume :)

on booting my machine alsa doesn't start properly. I tracked down the
problem to the point, that the script /etc/init.d/alsa exits in line 107
(see below).

I used alsa 0.5.x and it suddenly *stopped*. So, I took the opportunity
to upgrade the kernel to 2.4.7-31(smp) and give alsa 0.9.0rc1 a go on my
RedHat 7.2 box. Please note - the OSS driver does work, so I know this
is a working system.

SPDIF output to work on a Dell Inspiron 8200. I have seen talkback on
the dev list of a patch for this and it seems to have been included in
