Did some tweaking to the IRQ stuff. These are BGP routers so majority of traffic is limited to two ports. Did some manual assignments of CPU instead of auto.
Also went to multi-queue-ethernet-default as interface queue type.

I have thought about this also, you can get some nice dell servers with some powerful CPUs in them fairly cheap. If you go the CHR route using VMware, all you have to worry about is the VMware compatibly which is very well documented. I

I run all of mine that are mission critical in a dual set up so that at
any time they will automatically or can manually be switched to the
secondary. I do this not only with Mikrotik, but any platform that
doesn't have redundant controllers/switch fabric.
