VNC / Firewall

2001-08-06 Thread Zalman Margareten

What is the simple way to get out when only a limited amount of ports are
open. I know that you set the port # on the server side but how do you go
about setting the port on the viewer side ?

Maybe a silly question. I'm not familiar.

thanks

VNC through a firewall.

2001-08-07 Thread Zalman Margareten

I too am trying to run VNC through a firewall. Everything was fine
connecting out to my server at my home computer and vice versa until we
implemented a new firewall.
I understand that there's some Java viewer out there that would let me
communicate through the firewall by setting up some kind of virtual proxy
between the server and the viewer thus allowing me to talk over a common
open Port.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having trouble connecting to a server outside my firewall. Both server
and workstation are WinNT4 SP5. Server is running latest WinVNC. When I
try to connect using java client, I get java.io.eofexception error (after
about 5 minutes). Server can be accessed no problem from outside the
firewall. After checking firewall logs, no apparent problems with either
web or communication ports (58xx and 59xx), though workstation seems to be
trying to use port 137 as well. When addressing server, I used ip instead
of server name, so I'm not sure why it's trying to use NetBIOS port (137).
BTW, vncviewer doesn't work either.

VNC as a KVM switch

2001-08-22 Thread Zalman Margareten

I noticed my self utilizing VNC very often recently instead of my KVM
switch. I'm setting up another server room now and am seriously thinking of
substituting with VNC and doing w/o a KVM altogether.
Especially with VNC Commander where I can see more then one machine at a
time.
The only problem is when configuring the IP addresses when I will obviously
not have any access. Any ideas on possibility to get around that? Some thing
like accessing directly to a MAC address!
Also does anyone have any experience with dual monitor support in VNC ? I
know there is some contribution out there that supports it.

Thanks

RE: work(WINNT) <-> firewall(sockets allowed) <-> internet ,-> ho me(MACos9)

2001-08-29 Thread Zalman Margareten

Try connecting from work via "winvnc -connect "IP address" ". If that
doesn't work see where it stops. Run "netstat -n" and see if it established
a connection etc. In this case it should communicate on port 5500.

Good Luck!

Let me know..

In documentation for VNC win server there is a piece of information telling
that Vnc is normally listening to 5900, but also to 5800 (so machine can be
reached via IE, for example typing http:\\ip.add.re.sse:5800).

RE: Undocumented port in use by VNCviewer in Listen Mode?

2001-08-31 Thread Zalman Margareten

Are u trying to imply that it will establish the connection with port 5400
and then hand it over to 5500? I can understand this with the "regular"
connection that is initiated from the viewer where it will send a sync to
5800 and then establish a connection with 5900. But how do u explain it with
the "listener" method where it starts with 5500 according to my ( netstat -n
readings )?

I believe 5400 is the java web browser port for the viewer, just like
5800 works for the java web browser port on the "normal" VNC server.

I'm using the patched TridiaVNC viewer from this page all the time, on a

"Hiding the tray icon"

This is sort of a "taboo" issue... mainly because there seems to be no
legitimate reason to hide the server's icon. The only reason I can think of
is to facilitate spying on someone, which I believe the good folks at AT&T
Research are not interested in advertising, especially after the rather
nasty article in Time magazine that proclaimed vnc to be nothing more than
"spyware."

Having said that... vnc is open source. You can download the source code
and make whatever changes you want. But please don't be offended if no one
on the list wishes to help you do it. We'd all hate to see the vnc project
go closed source (or worse, be discontinued) due to any more bad press, and
the "feature" you're after is the heart of it.

RE: New Version of VNC Commander available

2001-09-05 Thread Zalman Margareten

Great product! thanks

Am I missing something? In the list of computers I only see icons with no
description of which computers they are.
Oh I just noticed, when in the "view details" mode it will list server name.
I think that name should appear as default with all views since all icons
look the same and there is no way of knowing which computer it is.

Are u asking about incoming connections or outgoing? Also what firewall do u

You might have to go with some type of tunneling. Give us more details.

I do this all the time, just map your VNC connect port to the IP of the
machine you're looking for and viola.
Granted, this means you need either access to the firewall device or you'll
have to convince an admin to add the mapping for you.

RE: VNC Access to pcs behind firewalls

2001-09-06 Thread Zalman Margareten

Then you can either do the -connect option (run "winvnc -connect
ipaddress/hos)from the server side, or map port 5800 and 5900 at the
firewall to the particular workstation. If you have more then one
workstation that you are trying to connect to, then you will need to
configure each workstation to listen on a different port then the default
5800 and 5900. The easiest way to set this would be through the display
setting in the properties. Note the port # will be the display value plus
5800. So for example if you set it to listen with display 10 you will enter
at the viewer "vncviewer ipaddress:5810".

Read up in the documents for more detail.

Good luck

You must be missing something,
In the large icon mode each icon has a caption that describes the

RE: How to Set AllowLoopback?

2001-09-06 Thread Zalman Margareten

Yes, you would need to create it. Just run regedit and browse out to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3]. In the right side of the screen
right click and create a dword key called "AllowLoopback" with a value of 1.
Restart the service and it will work.

Be aware when you use loopback that the monitor will indeed go into a loop
and depending on the resources of your computer it might crash your system
because of this.

RE: New Version of VNC Commander available

2001-09-07 Thread Zalman Margareten

Thanks Dan..

Tony!

"I just don't understand why someone would delete the display name?"

It actually also happens if you don't fill in a display name to begin with
by just skipping the field (w/o getting the curser in)

I upgraded to the newest version and its great! One suggestion though, when
closing a connection, it might be better to also close the open box.

Also, is there any help docs? I get an access violations when trying the
screenshot (maybe its still in the development stages, since you don't have
shortcut to it either).

can you also explain how the "Auto launch" works. I get a message about
"index lists" and it grays out.

Yes, That could very well be, if you delete the display name, then you will
get a icon with no caption.
I just don't understant why someone would delete the display name?
I guess I need to idiot proof it some more, I will add code that will check
if the display name is blank and then put the server address in for the
caption when the icon is rendered at form create.

Look for it in the next version

Hi,

  I have a VNC 3.3.3r7 server on Win2k.
When I try to access this from 3.3.3r3 solaris
  client ( installed on 2.6 ) or from 3.3.3r9
win98 client I face the following problem:

If I open an IE browser window and access a
site and do scrolling ( Not very fast ) after
sometime the browser window does not display
properly. Most of the stuff from previous
scroll page is left over. However if I move
the cursor back and forth on the browser window
the cursor acts like a wipe and "cleans" out old
stuff exposing the correct content that should
  be displayed.

Is this a know problem. Can I do something to fix it?

Thanks,
Suresh.

test SSH over through firewall

2001-11-08 Thread Zalman Margareten

How can I test if our firewall will let through SSH?
VNC protocol (RFB) seems to be restricted. (I only see the sync sent and no
response)

My options basically are to try to tunnel through a different protocol. I
only know about SSH and Tunnel (which is very slow due to public server's
limitation.

Preferably would be, to be able to compile VNC to run through other
protocols and ultimately to run the java viewer (or active x control out
there) through HTTPS. (This seems to be what gotomypc does with the RDP
protocol.

Any input would be appreciated.

The reason why I would want port 21 is because the firewall wont let any

If you're using an OS worth it's disk space, you can just redirect port
21 to port 5500.

VNC and XP remote desktop

Have you tried running the executable and seeing what error it raises? I
suspect that it will complain about a missing DLL.

The other possibility is that you have not configured a default password for
the server machine in the registry, in which case WinVNC will present a
dialog for you to enter one before you can connect.

Do an IPconfig (or winipconfig in 9x), then just fill in http://yourIP:5880
at the browser on the Internet. Don't forget this will only work after you
have configured your port = display # in the properties of VNC server to 80.

Good Luck

Hello:

Can anyone guide for how to configure VNC server so that I can connect my
VNC
server from Internet by giving http://IPADDRESS in Internet Browser? This is
because I am behind the firewall and my firewall doesn't allow me to acess
any
Internet site except at port 80.

Thanks,

Also note that if the firewall uses NAT translation and You get an internal

It might not be a question of security for you, but it might very well be
for your network admin. If at all possible, talk to him about it.
Otherwise, read the FAQ for instructions.

Reboot after a remote installation

2001-05-03 Thread Zalman Margareten

Hi

I successfully installed VNC remotely as a service on Windows NT/2000

after I restart. Is there any way that I can actually start the service w/o
having to reboot the machines.

You make some good points. So maybe AT&T should remove me from the VNC
contributed section?
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/extras.html#firewalls
http://www.workspot.net/~harmen/vnc/readme.html

On the other hand: restrictive firewalls make it very hard to apply
normal TCP/IP networking nowadays, so http as a transport layer
naturally comes into the picture for many networking apps. This doc
discusses some pros and cons:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-moore-using-http-01.txt

You can argue that connecting out with a vncviewer is pretty harmless,
since VNC doesn't do file transfers. Putting the viewer in listening
mode, and having the server connect out of a secured LAN is an entirely
different story, and I wonder why AT&T added that feature, but that's
probably due to my lack of imagination.

That works locally but I'm trying to start it remotely. It will start with
Services(thru srvrmnger) or netsvc utility even remotely but only after a
reboot does it show up as a service.

Perhaps I should rephrase my question. How do I activate vnc service after

I believe "net start winvnc" from a command prompt, or going into

RE: Remote Login

2001-05-07 Thread Zalman Margareten

Net strat will work locally but not remotely. You will need the "Netsvc"
utility off the Resource kit to remotely manage services.

But Mauro is right, you will sometimes need to reboot or log out to get the
service to start.

You can view the Service name with the Netsvc utility "netsvc /list

Or you can use the display name when inserting in quotes as net start

Exactly because its like the old 8.3 limit imposed on file names under DOS,
the services panel has the display name for the service, which maps to the
service name.

RE: Remote Login redux?

2001-05-07 Thread Zalman Margareten

The issue is how to install "remotely" as a service. So you don't have to
visit the machine in person.

It's possible by:

1) Copying the correct files (You only need three and can be placed anyware
- even the Omnithread.dll) to the remote computer
2) Adding the registry key to the remote computer. Again, in my experience
only the password key is necessary)
3)Instaling as a service (simplest method: at \\computername etc.
"c:\%\winvnc.exe" -install) to the remote computer.

To run winvnc as a service on NT (someone please fill in the
gaps)
1) You must first of course do an install of vnc
2) then you must install the service (I found this in a couple of different
flavors from the start menu)
3) and start the service running.
4) which will result in you being prompted for a password so far so
good.

Now if I log out and then try to use the vncviewer to view the NT box I
am confronted with the following issues:
a) it appears that I have set up a server for the administrator with the
admin password. but I want the box to use NT authentication. the
FAQs
say there is supposed to be a helper app that does this but leaves it
there in essence (I am a unix guy it apparently shows)
I want to set this up just as I would set it up for inetd..
b) the vnc session comes up if I give the password set, without apparently
inquiring of the username...
c) When it does come up I get a ctl-alt-del login screen. but how can I
issue thi sequence without invoking it on my PC

RE: Remote Login redux?

2001-05-08 Thread Zalman Margareten

your Question: How do I use NT user account authentication instead of the
single passwd I set
when I started the service?

Supposedly, the newest version of VNC should support this thru the VNC
helper in the start menu.

Your question: How do I set up the service so NT users can log in as
themselves, not as the
Administrator?

Please explain better..

Your question: How do I enter Ctl-Alt-Del at a vnc window w/o the key
sequence being read by
the current PC?

Just click on the top left hand corner of the VNC session screen and choose
"send ctrl+alt+del"

I don't want to install a service remotely. as far as I understand it
the

RE: How to install VNC on remote machine

2001-05-18 Thread Zalman Margareten

You forgot to mention that you will need to use some utility to run those
commands on the remote machine.
Also would anybody know of a batch file that does this( another utility
might be needed to add registry setting remotely thru a batch file ).
Since we sometimes need to take control remotely it would be nice if we can
just run a batch file and preferably run another batch file to undo the
installation (Uninstall the files and service).
The second batch file would be something like this:

"remote command"
net stop winvnc
winvnc -remove
Del c:\winvnc c:\vnc.dll c:\omnithread.dll
"remote registry command"
del "local machine\vnc hive etc."

1) install the package to your own local machine
2) start the WinVNC server with the password you want on the remote machine
3) copy the contents of the local directory to the remote machine
4) copy %windir%\system32\omnithread_rt.dll to the remote machine
5) on the remote console, run "winvnc -install" (no quotes)
6) using regedt32, open the remote machine's registry and copy *exactly*
the following registry entry from your box (you'll have to create some
keys):
 Key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default
 Value: Password
 Type: BINARY
Content: password hash from your machine
7) on the remote console, run 'net start "vnc server"'

It should let you connect just fine. You'll end up with all the defaults
because the only thing you "pre set" was the password, but once you're on
it via GUI, you can further refine the settings using the GUI dialog box.
